August 14, 2021 – A Devastating Earthquake
On August 14, 2021, a devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, primarily impacting the departments of Sud, Nippes, and Grand’Anse. The quake, more powerful than the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, lasted over 40 seconds and caused widespread destruction. By August 16, the death toll had risen to 1,419, with 1,133 fatalities in the South, 162 in Grand’Anse, and 122 in Nippes. Over 6,900 people were injured, and tens of thousands of homes were either destroyed or damaged: 37,312 homes destroyed and 46,913 damaged across the affected regions.
